What Is Minesweeper?

Minesweeper is a logic puzzle played on a grid of hidden cells, some of which contain mines. Revealing a safe cell shows a number indicating how many mines touch it, and you use those numbers to deduce which nearby cells are safe and which to flag as mines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I flag a suspected mine?

Right-click a cell on desktop, or press and hold a cell on a touchscreen, to place or remove a flag without revealing it.

What happens on my first click?

The first cell you reveal is always guaranteed to be safe, and mines are placed after that click so you never lose on the opening move.

Do I always have to guess at some point?

Sometimes, yes. Minesweeper boards occasionally reach a true 50/50 spot where two cells are equally likely to hide the mine and no amount of logic can tell them apart. When that happens, corners and edges are statistically a little safer than open guesses in the middle of the board.

How do I win?

You win by revealing every cell that does not contain a mine, without ever clicking directly on a mine.

Can I change the board size and difficulty?

Yes, use the Easy, Medium, or Hard buttons above the board to switch grid size and mine count before starting a new game.
