Tip Calculator
Compute gratuity, divide checks, and ensure fair contributions from every guest
What Is a Tip Calculator?
A tip calculator works out how much gratuity to leave based on your bill and a chosen percentage, then splits the total โ meal plus tip โ evenly across everyone at the table.
How Much Should You Tip?
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 18-20% (pre-tax), more for exceptional service |
| Counter service / takeout | Optional โ 10% or a few dollars |
| Food delivery | 15-20%, $4-6 minimum on smaller orders |
| Taxi / rideshare | 15-20% of the fare |
| Bartenders | $1-2 per drink, or 15-20% of the tab |
| Salon, spa, barber | 15-20% of the service cost |
Always check the bill first โ many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for parties of 8 or more, in which case no extra tip is needed on top.
Frequently Asked Questions
What percentage should I tip at a restaurant?
The old 15% rule has mostly been retired. 18-20% is now the standard baseline for sit-down service in the U.S. With 20%+ for exceptional service and 15% reserved for service that fell short.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Technically the pre-tax subtotal, since the tip is meant to reward the service and tax isn't part of that. In practice the difference is usually pennies, so tipping on the total is fine too.
Do I still need to tip if gratuity is already included?
No, not on top of it. Restaurants often add an automatic gratuity for large parties (usually 8 or more), so check your bill for a service charge line before adding an additional tip.
Is tipping expected for takeout or counter service?
It's optional, not required. A few dollars or 10% is a generous way to acknowledge the staff, but no one expects a full restaurant-level tip for a counter order.
How much should I tip a delivery driver?
15-20% is standard, with a $4-6 minimum on smaller orders. Drivers usually cover their own gas and vehicle costs, so a flat percentage on a cheap order can end up too low.
What about tipping in other countries?
Customs vary a lot by country. Some places build a service charge into the bill, and in a few, such as Japan, offering a tip can come across as rude. Look up local norms before you travel.
